Stuff that occurs to me

All of my 'how to' posts are tagged here. The most popular posts are about blocking and private accounts on Twitter, also the science communication jobs list. None of the science or medical information I might post to this blog should be taken as medical advice (I'm not medically trained).

Think of this blog as a sort of nursery for my half-baked ideas hence 'stuff that occurs to me'.

Organisations that make it easy for you to find their jobs

#Slashjobs .... /jobs
If you've come here looking for my massive list of "#scicomm jobs" science communication job vacancies pages (organised into medical research charities or science centres etc) from organisations that might employ science communicators please note that this #slashjobs post is probably the more accurate, however the #scicommjobs one linked above is more comprehensive.

Project #slashjobs (hashtag from Alex Brown) is trying to make it easier for people to find out about job vacancies by getting organisations to use a /jobs redirect page on their site - this means that if you type /jobs at the end of a homepage address and press enter it will take you to wherever the jobs vacancies page is.

Even if your vacancies page currently has no vacancies on it I think having a bookmarkable page is still useful. Clearly for much of the time there won't be a job advert on it that's ideal for any given visitor, but being able to know where to check is very useful. If you can stick an email alert system or RSS feed on it so that new jobs are sent to subscribers, so much the better.

The first batch of organisations listed are shining beacons and have a simple /jobs URL that points to their job pages (the second batch use a different word in the redirect link) and the third batch just have a job vacancies page on their site but don't use a redirect with /jobs in the title at the moment. My plan is to see if I can persuade those ones to do so - see here for more info. There's a fourth batch where I've not found a vacancies page yet on their site.

Some organisations in a peculiar position of providing both a jobs board (for jobs elsewhere) and a vacancies page (for their own jobs). I suppose the /jobs page could be a landing page giving visitors the option to choose which type of jobs they're interested in looking at, eg compare and

Please let me know if you spot any errors, thanks @JoBrodie

I still want the /jobs sites to have RSS feeds on them so that people can subscribe though and for individual adverts to state whether or not the job must be done by one person or if the organisation is open to considering two part-time people. But I'm starting with /jobs first.

4. Organisations that don't appear to have a vacancies page
Note: this is not to criticise them - some have only three members of staff so may justifiably feel having a jobs page is a bit daft. I'm still hoping I might persuade them though and their addition here is mostly for my 'admin purposes only' rather than to draw any attention to them. It's also possible that they do have such a page and it's just that I've not found it.

  2. Prostate Action and the Prostate Cancer Charity have recently merged to form Prostate Cancer UK. There jobs page is here:

Comment policy: I enthusiastically welcome corrections and I entertain polite disagreement ;) Because of the nature of this blog it attracts a LOT - 5 a day at the moment - of spam comments (I write about spam practices, misleading marketing and unevidenced quackery) and so I'm more likely to post a pasted version of your comment, removing any hyperlinks.

Comments written in ALL CAPS LOCK will be deleted and I won't publish any pro-homeopathy comments, that ship has sailed I'm afraid (it's nonsense).
