Stuff that occurs to me

All of my 'how to' posts are tagged here. The most popular posts are about blocking and private accounts on Twitter, also the science communication jobs list. None of the science or medical information I might post to this blog should be taken as medical advice (I'm not medically trained).

Think of this blog as a sort of nursery for my half-baked ideas hence 'stuff that occurs to me'.

Science in London: The 2018/19 scientific society talks in London blog post

Wednesday, 1 January 2025

If you work at one of these UK unis or educational institutions you can watch lots of free TV with "bob" from Learning On Screen

Note to university press officers checking this post for mention of your institution thanks to some Google alert it's simply a list of subscribers to Learning On Screen's Box of Broadcasts and your organisation is in the list (at the end).

The university I work at (Queen Mary University of London) has a subscription to Learning On Screen's "bob" (which used to be called Box of Broadcasts but now just seems to go by bob. It's wonderful.

It has over 2 million copies of broadcasts of television (including films shown on TV) and radio programmes and you can log in using your library credentials and watch or listen to stuff.

"Our academically-focused system allows staff and students, at subscribing institutions, to record programmes from over 75 free-to-air channels; and search our archive of over 2.2 million broadcasts."

From an educational viewpoint you can screen these in lectures (the rights are already sorted for that, but NOT for a public audience) and create clips to use. You can also create themed playlists and make them public for your students, or private.

From a fun point of view it has all sorts of films, TV and radio programmes too. For example Paddington 2, The Apartment, Elf, The Dish, It's A Wonderful Life, Dean Spanley, A Room with a View and "Alchemists of Sound" the 2003 documentary on the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. One of my favourite radio programmes is there as well, Rainer Hersch's "Gershwin's Horns" (May 2008) about the used car horns in An American in Paris and "other unusual instruments used by composers". That one's great fun.

Each programme comes with its own mini citation text to copy :D

Elf, 17:20 09/12/2012, Channel 4, 120 mins. https://learningonscreen.ac.uk/ondemand/index.php/prog/007753B9?bcast=92336580 (Accessed 31 Dec 2024)

There's often more than one copy of a programme as multiple broadcasts will be recorded so I tend to use an older one, particularly if it was broadcast on ITV or other ad-bearing channel as I enjoy the old adverts nostalgia too.

I recommend making use of the advanced search ('search options' in blue below the search bar), e.g. make sure you're searching for the title of the thing you want by selecting that. Also they're very helpful on email (bob@learningonscreen.ac.uk) and found something for me when I couldn't see it. The basic search isn't that great.

Comment policy: I enthusiastically welcome corrections and I entertain polite disagreement ;) Because of the nature of this blog it attracts a LOT - 5 a day at the moment - of spam comments (I write about spam practices, misleading marketing and unevidenced quackery) and so I'm more likely to post a pasted version of your comment, removing any hyperlinks.

Comments written in ALL CAPS LOCK will be deleted and I won't publish any pro-homeopathy comments, that ship has sailed I'm afraid (it's nonsense).
