Stuff that occurs to me

All of my 'how to' posts are tagged here. The most popular posts are about blocking and private accounts on Twitter, also the science communication jobs list. None of the science or medical information I might post to this blog should be taken as medical advice (I'm not medically trained).

Think of this blog as a sort of nursery for my half-baked ideas hence 'stuff that occurs to me'.

More emails trying to get a link on your site - this time it's attempted emotional blackmail

"...Then the Sun shined out warmly, and immediately the traveler took off his cloak." - Aesop's fable The North Wind and the Sun

There are many ways to ask someone to add a link back to your blog or website. People ask this because if you link to their site, when Google indexes all the pages and links on your website, Google 'reads' the fact that you've linked to a site as a recommendation, potentially helping that site to get a higher place in search results for particular keywords.

One of my pages receives a disproportionate number of requests (it's a popular page, though not my most popular) from people requesting that I add some link or other, much like a cuckoo leaves its eggs in other bird's nests.

Of course I'm not having any of it but I am interested in the methods used.

Recently I wrote about false copyright infringement requests (basically implying a DMCA take-down if you don't add a link) and today, after a BlueSky 'skeet'* from Jenny Shipway about the 'emotional blackmail' variant, decided to blog some examples.

They're... rather similar (and some of them (one of the examples shown but a common feature in others I've had and since deleted) have an unsubscribe link at the end - why would they have that?!).

I've redacted names and email addresses, and the spam links.

Hello,

I'm Ms. [Name redacted], a homeschooling teacher, and we wanted to express our gratitude for your helpful webpage: http://brodiesnotes.blogspot.com/2009/07/amrc-member-charities-websites.html. It has been an invaluable resource for our class.  (Edit - this is the page on my site that gets a lot of this!)

During extra credit research, one of our students, [girl's name redacted], came across this informative site: [irrelevant link redacted][girl's name redacted] believed it would be a great addition to your page and asked me to reach out to gauge your interest. Your consideration would mean a lot to [girl's name redacted] and our entire class.

We kindly request your thoughts on including this resource. Please let us know your decision, and we'll be eager to share this exciting news with [girl's name redacted] and her peers.

Thank you for your support!

Best regards,

Hi,

My name is [redacted] and I instruct an Astronomy Club for K12 students and just wanted to send a quick email and thanks. I was able to take advantage of some of your activity resources for my lessons (astroboost.org/external-resources). Thank you!

While exploring your page, one of my students, [girls name redacted], noticed you don't have an astronomy page we found together as a class. She thought it'd be a wonderful reference for students or other aspiring astronomers! :) I'll include it in my email below.

Anyways, I hope it's not too much trouble to ask to include it to your page? [Redacted link about space elevators]

[Girl's name redacted] is very shy and doesn't speak up much. I'm so proud of her for stepping out of her comfort zone and recommending a resource!

We meet as a class again tomorrow afternoon and I'd love to show how our recommendation is up for others to explore and learn from! I'm hoping it'll break her out of her shell and volunteer more wonderful ideas in the future. :)

Thanks again!

Hi,

I am [redacted], an educator currently guiding a group of science students on their educational journey. As we explore the world of astronomy, we came across your resource page https://www.ips-planetarium.org/page/resources, and I wanted to express our sincere appreciation for the invaluable information on your website that has greatly benefited our studies.

One of our diligent students, [Girl's name redacted], who has a keen interest in data science, discovered an excellent resource on the role of data science in astronomy and interstellar exploration at [Data science in space link redacted]

She suggested sharing it with you, believing it could enhance your webpage. We kindly request your consideration even if it's for a short while as it will also inspire our students.

Please let me know if you're able to add it to your page so that I can show it to my students. Thank you for your time and potential collaboration.

Hi,

I’m a volunteer teacher focused on STEM knowledge through adventure-based learning experiences. While researching resources, we came across your page brodiesnotes.blogspot.com/2009/07/amrc-member-charities-websites.html. Thank you for compiling such helpful information.

One resource my students love is [REDACTED, about STEM and cruise ship talks etc]. It highlights STEM-related activities available on cruises, including astronomy nights, stargazing opportunities, observatory visits, and interactive astronomy sessions. You can find it here: [REDACTED, for the purposes of thwarting this sort of spam]

Would you consider adding this guide to your page? I believe it could be a relevant resource for your visitors.

We deeply appreciate your efforts and your valuable contributions to the community.

Warm regards,
REDACTED

(My page linked there is a list of organisations' Jobs pages. It has nothing to do with STEM activities).

Subject: Dr. Shipway Girl Scout Space/Astronomy Question!
To: <jenny>

Hi Dr. Shipway!

My daughter, REDACTED is involved in Girl Scouts and she is working on earning her Space Science Researcher badge. Since the topic piqued her interest, her leader encouraged her to do some research at home.

Luckily we came across the AstroBoost site.
REDACTED is really enjoying looking through the Activity resources page: https://www.astroboost.org/external-resources

She really seems to be loving everything about space and astronomy so far… we actually went to the planetarium this past weekend and she had the best time. We bought her a telescope and some space books for her birthday last month that she's been using a bunch too! :)

REDACTED has struggled to find hobbies she really enjoys which is the reason we got her involved with the Girl Scouts program. It's been great to see her find something she likes – I haven't seen this big of a smile on her face in awhile.

During our research we came across another great resource and
REDACTED was hoping you could check it out: WEBSITE REDACTED

It has a bunch of info about astrophotography and she thinks it's so fascinating! She would be so excited to see it included on the site... and I know her troop leader would be extremely proud of her for going above and beyond.

Is this something you're able to include on the Activity resources page? If so, her next meeting with her troop isn't until Friday. It would be wonderful if you were able to add it before then.

Please let me know if this is something you are able to do! Thanks for the help and support.

Have a great day,
REDACTED

Copyright infringement - spam email attempting to get a link on a website

Update 21 Nov - I've now had 3 of these emails and I've added the others at the end.

Here's some nonsense (text version at the end) -

Last week I received the above email (from someone purporting to be legally-adjacent) telling me that an image I'd used on my work website was in breach of their client's copyright.

This is the image -

Image of an android man from Pixabay

To fix this all I'd need to do was add a clickable link from my website to their clients. This is baloney.

People use all sorts of tactics to try and get their website linked from other sites because this is read by Google as 'esteem'.

If I link to your website from this blog (or any other site) I am effectively 'recommending' that site to readers. Strategies for getting a 'link back' on someone's website include offering to write a guest post (that includes a link to a particular target site), or sometimes people offer payment for you to add a link. Another way is to comment on a blog post, or like it and hope that someone clicks on their profile (or a link in the comment if it's been accepted).

How I confirmed that this email was nonsense
Several websites were useful: WHOIS to see when the various websites had been registered (very recent, suspicious), WAYBACK MACHINE to see if and when the site was first captured (again, recent).

The image we originally used actually comes from Pixabay (free to use) and it was uploaded there in 2014, several years before we used it and well before 'Claude AI' created their website (July 2023) or used the image themselves.

I used GOOGLE IMAGES SEARCH to see that the same image had been used on many other sites too (it was possible that it had been wrongly lifted and added to Pixabay but that hadn't happened here).

There was also this more recent article from The Skeptic magazine - the format of the email is very similar to the requests I received.

Note: the image comes from Pixabay and was uploaded there in 2017, seven years before either the claude ai wiki site was registered or, for that matter, the elite justice advisors dot biz site.

My reply said

Dear Noah

The image is already correctly credited to Pixabay (https://pixabay.com/illustrations/success-strategy-business-solution-2081167/) so I will not be linking to Claude AI as they have nothing to do with this image. It was created and uploaded to Pixabay in 2017, several years before either the link you'd like me to add (or even your own website) were registered.

Incidentally this is the third example of this email I've received within the last year, I will add it to the other two on my blog - thank you for sending it to me for my collection https://brodiesnotes.blogspot.com/2024/02/copyright-infringement-spam-email.html.

Best wishes

Inundated with spammers trying to get a link on my posts ;)

A post I wrote back in 2009 and updated in 2013 receives a disproportionate amount of spam attempts in which someone tries to get me to add a link to the page. Of course the link they want me to add has nothing to do with the page (it's very clear they've not read it or understood the page).

The intention in getting the link onto my page is to 'tell' Google that my site thinks their page is worth linking to. Nope. This has been going on for a decade and I have kept 50 or so examples which I'll gradually add below, with their link, name and email address redacted.

The page in question is which is a fairly popular page but is actually only my 10th most-read page is (inexplicably!). You might expect they'd want to pick a more popular one but perhaps are hoping to go under the radar.

Where London science communicators might work (24 July 2009) - this one attracts all the spam despite being much less popular than nine other posts.

All-time views for the most-read posts on this blog - the one
that attracts all the spam is the one right at the bottom!

Here are some examples from the back catalogue.

Suggestion of a link about nursing but my page is not about that.

I get a lot of requests from people claiming to be teachers or home educators saying that a small child in their class is terribly excited to share a resource with me and please can I add it and then tell them I've added it so they can celebrate. Bit too social engineering for my liking. Hard no.

The most recent one, on holistic ophthamlmology.
Note that 'click to unsubscribe' link at the end. I hadn't subscribed ;)

Spam link attempt from weight loss surgery and diabetes

Spam link attempt from someone with a guide
for safe travelling for people with diabetes

And a couple of bonus emails from people who've misinterpreted my post showing how you could (in 2012) "bypass" a third-party resource for handling RSS feeds sent to Twitter.

Handy Twitter RSS feeds to bypass IFTTT Twitter trigger switchoff (30 September 2012)

Someone asking me to post advice that is about heart bypasses on a
page where I'm talking about a completely different type of bypass.

This one is hoping to get a page about heart disease
and hair loss after a bypass on my page.

Another one just came in later this evening!
